Choosing your wedding hairstyle is about more than finding a beautiful photo on Pinterest. It’s about finding a style that you feel and look the most comfortable in, the style needs to compliment your dress and your features.
Something I always tell my brides that instead of choosing the latest trend, it’s important to feel comfortable with the way your hair looks in photos.
At Ally Lynn Makeup & Hair, we believe the most beautiful bridal hairstyles are the ones that feel intentional, timeless and effortlessly you. Here are a few things to consider when choosing your wedding day hairstyle.
1. Consider Your Wedding Dress and Neckline
Your wedding dress can definitely be a great starting point while deciding what your bridal hairstyle can be. The neckline, back details and overall look of your dress can help you find a style that compliments you.
Strapless or sweetheart neckline: These styles offer beautiful flexibility. Soft waves, romantic half-up hairstyles and elegant low buns can all work beautifully.
High neckline or detailed bodice: An updo is a lovely option for showcasing intricate details around the neckline while creating a polished overall look.
Open back or low-back dress: Consider a low bun, romantic updo or softly pinned hairstyle that allows the back of your dress to take centre stage.
Minimalist or modern dress: Sleek buns, clean updos and polished waves can complement a more contemporary bridal aesthetic.
Remember, these are simply starting points. Your hairstyle should ultimately reflect your personal style and what makes you feel your best.
2. Think About Your Hair Type and Natural Texture
One of the most important things to consider when choosing a bridal hairstyle is your natural hair type. Let me tell you a story from this past wedding season. I had a beautiful bride come for a trial and she wanted a slick back bun, her natural hair was very fine and thick and the look we were trying to accomplish was not working the way we wanted it to, we decided to do a simple French twist and the bridal style complimented her features while still giving the bridal look she was wanting!
Hair thickness, length, texture and density can all influence how a particular style will look and hold throughout the day.
If you love the look of full, voluminous Hollywood waves but have naturally fine or shorter hair, hair extensions may help achieve the desired result.
It's also important to consider your natural texture. Working with your hair rather than completely against it can often create a more effortless and wearable finish.
At Ally Lynn Makeup and Hair we can help you determine what style will work for your hair style and texture.
3. Consider Your Wedding Venue and Weather
Your wedding location and time of year can also influence your hairstyle choice!
If you are getting married during the summer and the temperature and humidity is high that may help you choose a bridal style. An updo may offer more security for an outdoor wedding.
That doesn't mean you need to avoid wearing your hair down. With the right preparation, products and styling techniques, beautiful waves can absolutely be an option.
It's simply about choosing a hairstyle that works with your environment rather than against it.
4. Don't Forget About Your Veil and Hair Accessories
If you're planning to wear a veil, hairpiece or other accessories, these should be considered when choosing your hairstyle. Veil’s can weigh down the hair (depending on where you are wanting it placed) so extra support may be needed for the hair style.
Some brides love the look of a veil tucked underneath a low bun, while others prefer it placed higher on the head with soft waves or a half-up hairstyle.
If you're wearing a veil for your ceremony and plan to remove it for the reception, we can help ensure the hairstyle still looks beautiful once the veil is taken out.
Bring your accessories to your hair trial whenever possible so everything can be considered together!
Finding the Bridal Hairstyle That Feels Like You
With so much inspiration available online, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of beautiful bridal hairstyles to choose from.
Our biggest advice? Don't get too caught up in trends or feel like you need to recreate someone else's wedding look.
Think about how you normally like to wear your hair, what makes you feel confident and which details you are naturally drawn to. Your wedding hairstyle should feel like a beautiful version of yourself, not a completely different person.
At Ally Lynn Makeup & Hair, we take the time to understand each bride's vision, hair type and personal preferences. From romantic updos and soft, effortless waves to timeless, polished styles, our goal is to create a bridal look that feels beautiful, comfortable and uniquely yours.
